Fact Checking

on our watch

I fact checked KQED’s 8-part podcast exposing corruption in New Folsom, the most violent prison in California. The multiyear investigation found a persistent code of silence among officers at the prison that went largely unchecked by prison leadership and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). An exclusive analysis of hundreds of internal use-of-force records, dozens of leaked documents and videos, and interviews with current and former CDCR officers revealed a culture of cover-ups that enabled the abuse of incarcerated people, officer-on-officer harassment and at least two homicides at the prison.

70 Million

I was lead fact checker for the Peabody-nominated criminal justice podcast 70 Million, including most of the fourth season. Each episode was focused on a completely different subject, and reported by a different journalist. The stories were narrative, often investigative in nature, and involved both document analysis and careful treatment of personal details for a range of story subjects.
